They stuffed as many food cubes and snack bars as they could into their pockets and hurried back to the earlier passageway. Kaylee looked up and down the corridor, a thought that had nagged her up until that point finally clicking.

“Where is everyone?” She said. She peered around the nearest corner. Everything was quiet. More than that, it felt as if there wasn’t anybody in the castle at all. “I know this part of the castle isn’t used much, but I thought the proctors said they’d be sending people in to rescue the participants.”

“My guess,” Maddox said darkly, “is Liam never intended to send anyone.”

“All the better we’re going in,” Edwin said.

He waved a hand and ignited an orange ball of magic in his palm. The ball floated in a small orbit around his body, leading the way as they stepped into the dark cavern entrance. Almost immediately there were steps leading down, slick with moisture. The air turned sharp and chilly and Kaylee was thankful the new suit was doing a good job of insulating her. Whoever had made it had done a fantastic job, and she could feel the charms Edwin had cast into it, buzzing through the fabric and across her skin, making her feel strong, making her feel ready to take on anything.

Hopefully they wouldn’t have to.

A minute later the steps ended at a sand floor which soon changed to a smooth rock path. Combined with Edwin’s light and Kaylee’s eye of dragon, the entire place was lit up far more than she thought possible. The path they walked occasionally opened up to immense chambers, then ducked back into narrow trails slicing between boulders or the crumbling remains of buildings, much like the kind she’d come across earlier. More than once she spied what she thought might have been those same symbols carved in the rock she’d seen in her vision, but they danced out of Edwin’s light before she could get a look.

The path they walked suddenly squeezed into a narrow chasm between the rocks. Kaylee controlled her breathing, trying not to let the seemingly-claustrophobic space get to her. She tried not to imagine Jade somewhere in here, trapped under rocks, maybe running out of air, maybe dying…

“Kaylee, what did you mean earlier when you said you didn’t tell Jade something?” Edwin said. His tone was light, but Kaylee could hear the tension beneath it. He wasn’t too happy about being closed in either.

Maddox glanced at Kaylee, his pupils a little more dilated behind his light enhancing mask. “Told her what?”

“I…I didn’t want to worry her,” Kaylee said. “And I told Liam…”

She recounted what had happened the previous night. Of her sneaking down the passageway. The voices in the cavern.

As she spoke, Maddox’s hands shook at his sides until he was forced to clench them into fists. “You told Liam this and he didn’t do anything?”

“You said Randy knows about it?” Edwin said. When Kaylee nodded he let out a sigh of relief. “That’s something. I’m sure he suspected Liam even before we got here.
